While no agency out there is perfect, there is a perfect agency for you! When it comes to finding the right agency for your family, don’t settle. We’re here to help guide you.
Write down a list of requirements. To start the process, you must know what you are looking for. Write down a list of requirements or qualities you expect from your agency. Try to keep the list under ten items. If you’re having trouble thinking of what you do want, try to think of what you don’t want!
Browse their websites. Now that you know what you want, it’s time to start the research. Start with the agencies closest to you. Utilize the resources on the agencies’ websites to get to know them.
Schedule an interview. Once you have found a few agencies you are interested in learning more about, set up an in-person or over the phone interview. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions!
Background Check. You want to make sure the agency you are working with is reputable. We don’t recommend running background checks on every agency you are considering, but just the final two or three agencies you are seriously considering.
While there isn’t an agency that is without flaw, there are certain things we recommend looking for. A good agency is one that centers around the child. Below is a list of other things we believe make for a good agency:
- They put an emphasis on pre-adoption education.
- They provide pre and post-adoption counseling for first-time mothers.
- They support the birth parents’ decision either way.
- They try to find homes for harder to place children.
- They make lifetime commitments to you and your child through post-adoption services.
